Must be 21+, a U.S. citizen or legal resident, and a NM resident. Complete a state-approved training course, pass a background check, and demonstrate proficiency with the caliber you intend to carry. Your CHL is caliber-specific - qualify with a 9mm and your license covers 9mm and smaller; a larger caliber (e.g. .45 ACP) requires separate qualification.

Store in a cool, dry location. In homes with children, store ammunition separately. For a home defense firearm in a quick-access safe, it is reasonable to keep it loaded - the safe is the barrier.
