Concealed Carry in New Mexico: What You Need to Know Before You Carry

Understanding New Mexico's Concealed Carry Law

New Mexico is a "shall-issue" state, meaning that if you meet all the legal requirements, the state is required to issue you a Concealed Handgun License. The application process is administered through the New Mexico Department of Public Safety (NMDPS).

To qualify for a New Mexico CHL, you must:

• Be at least 21 years of age
• Be a U.S. citizen or legal resident alien
• Be a New Mexico resident
• Have no felony convictions or disqualifying misdemeanors

The license is valid for four years and must be renewed before expiration. Your CHL is specific to the caliber of firearm you qualified with, so if you plan to carry a different caliber, you will need to qualify with that firearm as well.

Where You Cannot Carry in New Mexico

Even with a valid CHL, there are locations where carrying a concealed firearm is prohibited by law:

• Schools and school grounds (K–12 and universities)
• Courthouses and court facilities
• Polling places on election day
• Licensed liquor establishments (bars and restaurants where alcohol is the primary business)
• Any federal building or federal property
• Private property where the owner has posted clear "no firearms" signage

Always pay attention to posted signage when entering any establishment. Respecting private property rights is part of being a responsible carrier.

Reciprocity: Carrying Outside New Mexico

New Mexico has reciprocity agreements with a number of other states, meaning your New Mexico CHL may be recognized when you travel. However, reciprocity agreements can change, and each state has its own rules about what out-of-state licenses it will honor. Before traveling with your firearm, always verify the current reciprocity status with the destination state's law enforcement or attorney general's office.
